Ruby Bridges visited the White House to see how a painting commemorating her personal and historic milestone looks hanging on the wall outside of the Oval Office. Great video from the Baltimore School for the Arts profiling a few of its visual arts students and the interests that inspire them.
A friend posted a link on Facebook yesterday to spoken word artist Gil Scott Heron’s music video for his single, Me and the Devil.
“Hmm, Gil Scott Heron’s got a new track out?” I said to myself. He’s been MIA for quite a while.
Well, I had no idea what I was in for as I followed that link.
First off, Gil ABSOLUTELY delivers vocally. Sounding like a Gandalf of the streets, the stream of consciousness he recites throughout this track is both enigmatic, haunting and intimate.
Now about the visuals. They’re like a Molotov cocktail of volatile youth, raw urban grit and primal goth, tossed right into the cerebral cortex. Not only does it sweep one’s audio and visual senses into intoxication, but I found that I could even feel the abrasive texture and smell the night air of each NYC location depicted. Homage, directly or indirectly, seems to be paid to classic New York mean streets cinema like Walter Hill’s The Warriors, Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, and Larry Clark’s Kids.
What a gem from directors Coodie & Chike and Michael Sterling Eaton. What a gift to hear Gil, as relevant and timeless as ever, doing his thing.
